Double Glazing Rogue Traders

Double Glazing Rogue Traders

Hertfordshire Trading Standards is warning residents of North Hertfordshire to be on their guard against double glazing rogue traders, after receiving complaints from residents in Letchworth.

This company knocked on a resident’s door at the end of last week and told them that they were working in the street behind them in association with the Council. As the house was an ex council one, they would qualify for the government backed grant that would apply to the replacement and recycling of the old windows. A contract for £6000 was agreed, a deposit of £2000 made and paperwork given.

Luckily, when the residents told family about what had happened, they realised that it was a scam. The contract was cancelled and the trader has agreed to give a full refund.

The company was not working with North Herts District Council or Hertfordshire County Council and there are no such grants available. Trading Standards are now investigating the matter.

Trading Standards are advising homeowners in North Herts that if they were signed up to new double glazing on the back of a story similar to that above, to consider if they actually still want to carry on with the contract. If not, they need to check their paperwork and contact the company as soon as possible to cancel. There is a statutory 14 day cooling off period that applies to contracts agreed at a consumer’s home but in the case of double glazing, it may be less or there may not be any right to cancel. Also contact the bank to advise them of a potential misrepresentation issue with the contract and to ask for their assistance in obtaining a refund as required.

For further advice please contact Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133. They will pass any criminal matters that need further investigation to Trading Standards.
