Our Hitchin Town News

An Exciting Few Weeks In Town!

It’s been an exciting few weeks for Hitchin town centre!
The annual Hitchin FoodFest was held on 7th and 8th September which took an immense amount of planning to ensure we focused on the food and drink offer of our town. We held a number of meetings in the run up to this event and many of the food businesses offered their ideas and suggestions to ensure our award-winning town centre eateries were highlighted. The event was hugely successful— 30% of the stall holders were BID businesses and an amazing 100% putting out samplers in the Taster Tent!
Our next focus was the Great British High Street Awards judging which took place on Tuesday 10th. The judges arrived at 1pm and were shown a 10 minute video highlighting the best bits of the town in line with the judging criteria. They were then given a tour which ended at the top of the St Mary’s church tower. The video is now making the rounds on social media and has had a hugely positive response. I have been extremely humbled by the support from local businesses, residents and organisations in the run up to the judging. There is huge pride in our town and the work undertaken by the people of Hitchin has been incredible. Voting closes on 7th October and the results will be announced in November.
If you have not already voted, please visit and click on the Great British High Streets banner at the top of the home page. You can vote once a day, every day!

Hitchin BID Staff

We now have an excellent team of Hitchin BID staff who work tirelessly all year round to ensure the town is a clean, vibrant, safe and well promoted place for visitors to enjoy and businesses to benefit from.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff, who contribute so much toward the town and its upkeep and also give a warm welcome to Islay Shelbourne who has recently joined the team. She is covering Front of House in the Information Centre on Saturdays.

Coffee Logs on Sale

Having collected over 250kg of used coffee grounds with our electric ‘Bean Buggy’, we have received the first delivery of coffee logs. Each bag contains 16 logs and burns 20% hotter than wood. They retail at £10 per bag or 2 for £18. Hitchin businesses can purchase bags for resale from the Information Office for £6 per bag. For more information, please get in touch with:

Bancroft Day

On 21st September we celebrated the first annual Bancroft Day. This event was aimed at highlighting and promoting the eclectic mix of businesses with promotional events, live music and family fun activities. Thankfully the sun was out, and the road was packed with visitors rediscovering our many independent businesses and service industries!
Once again a massive thank you to the team at Aitch Creative who designed the poster and the ‘What’s Behind the Doors’ campaign as a contribution to the event.

Eastway Enterprises

Eastway Enterprise Centre is pleased to announce the commencement of works to create a series of brand-new one, two and three person offices at its central Hitchin location.
The new office spaces, which should be ready to rent from the  7th October, will further improve the facilities available to local businesses and ensure that the centre continues to adapt to the ever-changing business landscape.
Peter Vegh, Centre Manager, says: "These improved offices will be perfect for businesses that are looking to grow. Eastway Enterprise Centre is in a perfect location, with easy access to the town centre and to Central London."

The next meeting is on Thursday 10th October at 10.30am at the Sun Hotel.
For licensees with Police and licencing officers. There will be an update on the Town Centre from Tom Hardy.

Business Breakfast

The next business breakfast is on Thursday 31st October at 7.30am, venue to be confirmed.
Usual mix of town updates, commercial news and forthcoming events. The cost remains at £10 payable on the day but please do let Cherry know if you are attending so that we can confirm numbers.

Highway Repairs

Over the past few months we have been working with Hertfordshire Highways on repairs and improvements to the public realm. Work has now started on repairing the steps in Mosses Corner ready for the reinstatement of the white lines. Our Rangers are very active in reporting highways faults as well as business representation at regular meetings.

Christmas Programme

Our Christmas brochure details all the events happening around the town from 30th November up to and including Christmas Eve. If you are planning an event and would like a listing in the programme please get in touch—the deadline is 1st October. This gets booked up very quickly so if you would like an advert in this publication please email:

Social Media

All BID businesses have priority on our social media platforms.
If you have a special event/promotion/food offer in-store during the month of December let us know so that we can promote you! Alternatively, send us some general information and pictures for a post on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram:

Sir Ian Dixon Water Fountain

I am pleased to announce that the Fountain opposite St Mary’s will be reinstated by the end of October.
Extensive work is being carried out to excavate the old fountain and install the new one. The river will be drained on 14th October for one week to allow the work to be carried out.

Christmas Opportunities

Last year we filmed a compilation video where BID businesses were asked to say ‘Merry Christmas from…’ to the camera. We compiled the clips and put it out on social media which had a huge response. If you are interested in featuring your business let us know and we will come round to you with a camera and mic!

The Christmas Tree Lights Switch On is Saturday 30th November and there will be a parade travelling through town again. It will start at Sainsbury’s at 5.30pm and finish on the Market Place. We are looking for BID businesses to join this part of the event by either dressing up or handing out flyers while walking in the parade. Last year’s was great fun and everyone that took part really got into the spirit! To join in,
