Hitchin's new Town Rangers

We are pleased to announce that Ben Ping and Nathan Clare will be starting as the new Hitchin Town Centre Rangers. Their role has responsibility for the
day-to-day, smooth running of the town centre operationally, working with the public, our partners and businesses. They will respond to local business queries as well as ensuring the town centre is clean, safe and provides a quality experience for visitors, employees and businesses. They also play an important part in maintaining contact with Hitchin’s businesses and the wider public, handing our publicity material, maps, visitor guides and generally being a welcome ambassador.

We received over 40 applications for the positions and we’re delighted to have chosen Ben and Nathan to undertake the roles.

Etcetera is award finalist

Etcetera has been selected as a finalist in The Greats Gift Retailer Awards 2019.

The Greats Awards were launched by Progressive Gifts & Home magazine to recognise and reward the UK's very best gift retailers across the retail spectrum. All retail finalists were decided as a result of an industrywide poll of gift suppliers, reps and agents and validation by a panel of experts and the awards recognise and celebrate not only the top independent and multiple gift retailers regionally and nationally, but also outstanding retail employees.

The winners will be revealed at an Awards lunch in London in May.

Business Breakfast

The next business breakfast is on Wednesday 8th May at 7.30am at
Hermitage Rd. Usual mix of town updates, commercial news and forthcoming events.

The cost remains at £10 payable on the day but please do let Cherry know if you are attending so that we can confirm numbers. Email:

Attention! Shops, restaurants and cafes

At the recent NHDC Ratepayers meeting, the Council decided to explain the details of the Governments Business Rates relief scheme.

If you’re a shop, restaurant or café with a Rateable Value between £12,000 and £51,000 you will be eligible for a 3rd off your rates bill. NHDC have been delegated the responsibility of deciding which businesses fall under the shop, restaurant and café category.

If you believe you fall under this category and the deduction is not shown on your April 2019 bill then please email: who can put you in touch with the relevant officer at NHDC

The Hoskins Flagpole

On Monday 25th March a flagpole was erected in the Market Place to commemorate Keith Hoskins MBE 22 years’ service to Hitchin Town Centre.

The project was undertaken as a surprise for Keith and he was delighted to have this unveiled in recognition of his hard work and dedication to the town centre.

Future High Streets Fund

The Future British High Streets fund is a tranche of funding from Central Government to support projects being undertaken in UK towns ‘facing challenges’. Councils had the opportunity to submit only one expression of interest application per District by 22nd March.

Over the past 3 months Hitchin BID, Hitchin Initiative, Churchgate Resurgence Group, MP Bim Afolami, the Hitchin Forum and other local groups worked hard to draft an expression of interest application that highlights the challenges facing Hitchin Town centre and the need for investment. As NHDC received another application from Letchworth a full council meeting was held on 20th March to debate and vote on which one would be put forward.

I am delighted to announce that the Councillors voted 28 to 7 in favour of the Hitchin application and will therefore be submitting this one to Central Government for consideration.

A couple of our town centre businesses have vacancies:

Scissum in Bucklersbury is looking for a self employed full time stylist to join their team. Call Alison on 01462 615300 for more information

Vintage Bay require a hard-working, reliable, creative and fun individual to join their team working part time on Sundays with occasional Saturdays and weekdays. Applicants must be over 18 and have previous retail experience. Send a copy of your CV to:

Car Park Early Closing

North Herts District Council have announced earlier closure for the Lairage multi-storey car park in Hitchin. Due to a significant level of anti-social behaviour NHDC have made the decision to close the car park early each day.
From Monday 25th March the car park will close at 18.45. This is in response to concerns raised by car park users and local residents and has also been done on advice from the police. It will initially be a temporary measure to monitor the impact that it has on anti-social behaviour, as there are also some instances during the day as well.

It will give NHDC some time to fully review other options that might be available. It is appreciated that there will be an impact on people who work late and use the car park after the new closing time.

NHDC surveys show that few people use the car park after hours and they will monitor any complaints. There are notices placed next to payment machines and at entrances to the car parks.

If you have any queries regarding this then please contact either Louise Symes or Ian Fullstone at NHDC.
